Pumpkin Jack

We read the book "Pumpkin Jack" and then started an experiment to see what happens to a pumpkin we carved over time. Each day we will record what our pumpkin looks like, paying particular attention to changes.

Happy Halloween

We had so much fun learning with a Halloween theme today. In math we counted out pumpkin seeds, quickly discovering that counting by 10's was the most efficient way. Writing Workshop provided us with the opportunity to publish a class book about what we were going to be for Halloween. Reading Workshop was connected as well - we used a patten book to learn about and try out 3 different reading strategies. They were using the first letter/sound, the picture as a clue, and recognizing the pattern of the story. After lunch we changed into our costumes, danced to some Halloween music, enjoyed a yummy snack, playing a few games, and finally wrapped it all up by leading the k-4 on a costume parade around the entire school.

3D Shape Hunt

We explored 3D shapes today by going on a shape hunt. It was amazing to find so many 3D shapes in our school.

Shape Paths

This new game is a great,  fun way to practice shape identification. Partners choose a card, identify the shape and move their pawn to the closest corresponding shape.

Zooming In

Today we looked closely at our writing looking for places to "zoom in" and add more details and/or description. This gave us a great opportunity to think about our characters, setting and details.

Science

On Wednesday we began a pumpkin science unit. Using our 5 senses we created a list of words to describe the inside and outside of a pumpkin. Then we followed up with individual pumpkin models.

Math Workshop

Our exploration of shape attributes lead us to some partner work today. We partnered  up and talked about our shapes, specifically what is the same and different about them. Then we mixed-up and sorted a variety of shapes with our sorting rule being "curves and no-curves"

Writing Wokshop

Our focus for today - setting!!! We went back to our mentor text and discussed the setting on a few pages, and how much we can tell about the story because of the illustrators detailed setting. Then it was independent writing time where we had the chance to work on our own setting. Then back to circle to share with a partner.
