New Information With Nonfiction Books

Today our "I can" statement was: "I can learn new things when I read nonfiction books."

We used the book "Children Around The World" to practice active reading and rereading informational books as a way of jumping into new adventures to learn new information. In this book we traveled around the world, stopping in Canada, The United States, Mexico, Brazil, Kenya, China and Australia to learn what life is like I each of these places. We then drew and wrote about a place we have each visited, really thinking about things we saw and heard while we were there.

This was a fun way for us to explore the following common core standards:

Reading: Informational Text

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

7. With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear (e.g., what person, place, thing, or idea in the text an illustration depicts).

Reading: Informational Text

Key Ideas and Details

3. With prompting and support, describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
