There's A Shape In My Pocket

This is our new favorite guessing game! To play we first reviewed our shape cards that we used in previous lessons. Then I told students that I had one of the shapes hidden in my pocket and to guess which one they would have to ask questions to eliminate shapes from the chart. They had great questions! Here are some examples:

Does it have three corners?
Is it large or small?
Is it red?
Are the sides straight?
Are all 4 sides the same length?

Pattern Block Puzzles

I had a couple of student requests to post these pictures on the blog. Yep, thats right, our  5 and 6 year olds know that a blog is a perfect tool for sharing information! :)

Book Buddies

We participated in our first book buddy session of the year! Older students and younger students read together as a community building activity. The older students  were very impressed that kindergarten students were able to read to them!

Our Search For Sight Words

During Reading Workshop today we learned how to take a "book walk" before reading to look for words we know and how that can help us read our just-right-books. We called words that we can read quickly by sight snap-words. Theses are words that we can read as quickly as you can snap your fingers. To practice we read one of our favorite books, "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood and used highlighting tape to mark words we consider to be snap-words. Then each student had the chance to try it on their own with a "just-right-book." I am hoping this is one more tool for our reading tool boxes.

Common Core Standard RF.K.3 (Reading: Foundational Skills) - phonics & word recognition, know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words

Which Numeral Will Win?

Our new workplace in Math is called "Which Numeral Will Win?" To play we spin a spinner, read the numeral, and record the numeral on our recording sheets. It is such a fun way to practice number identification and writing.

Lucky Me!

I am so lucky to have kids that choose me as their PBIS reward!!!!  One of these girls chose "lunch with adult of your choice" as her star reward and invited two friends to join us. We had such a nice lunch together :)

Super Readers!

In Reading Workshop today we practiced thinking about what is happening in a book and pointing to the pictures and writing as we read. It is our new reading "superpower!" To use this reading superpower a reader must follow these simple steps:

First point to the pictures
Then point to the writing
Last use the two to read the story that goes with those pictures and words

After a short demo we put it to the test with partners and it works! We used writing from our very own writing workshop folders which made it all the more meaningful that our own writing is readable with this great new power of ours :)

This lesson and activity will help us accomplish the kindergarten common core standard RL.K.7 - with prompting and support describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear
