Book Shop

I had some great plans for Reading Workshop today but we put them on hold because the kids requested a "book shop" day! This is when they browse a collection of books to find just-right-books! I am so excited that they are asking for new books for their browsing boxes!!!!

Common core Standards:
I can know and apply grade-level phonics nod word analysis skills in decoding words

Learning About Our Families

We are learning about our families. Today we read the book "In My Family" and then began our own books by drawing who is in each of our families. At the end of our exploration of families students will be able to:

Identify their own family celebrations and traditions
Describe important events in their life time
Explain and draw how their family unit meets their needs
Contrast their holiday celebrations and foods with other families in the community
Draw pictures and writing showing family shelter, food celebrations, needs, wants, rules, jobs, play and recreational activities

Community Based Learning

In the Fall the kindergarten spent a lot of time out and about in the community and our school grounds, learning! The pictures on this post are from some of those experiences. They really prove the expression " A picture is worth a thousand words . . . . " is so true!

Buddy Reading

We are practicing warming up with a picture walk before reading new stories. We used a new anchor chart to remind us what it looks like and sounds like when we are "warming up" with a good book. Here is what our chart says:

I can warm up before I begin reading!
First we, look at the pictures and the title of the book.
Then we say to ourselves, "What might this book be about?" And "What hints do the title, cover, pictures and words give me?"
Last we use that to say what the whole book is about.

After some whole group modeling we were ready to practice with partners.
This activity helps us with the following common core standards:
RI.K.5 - Identify the front cover, back cover and the title page of a book
RL.K.7- With  prompting and support describe the relationship between illustrations and the story inwhich they appear
