Teddy Bear Picnic

Our school is a PBIS school. This means students are recognized for positive behavior. At Folsom, positive behavior is recognized and recorded with paper stars. In the kindergarten the stars are counted and recorded on ten-frames to earn rewards. It takes 50 student stars to earn an individual reward and 500 stars to earn a class reward. For the second time this year we have earned 500 stars!!! This time we voted for a teddy bear picnic complete with PJ's. It was a great way to end 2013! :)

Awards For Kindergarten Students

Folsom held a school wide celebration of learning on Dcecember 20th. The kindergarten shared a favorite book with singing and dancing, and then received some awards for academic excellence and perfect attendance. Well done kindergarten!

Smile Pretty!

Walking In A Winter Wonderland

Thank You Mrs. Warren

Today we will celebrate 4 months of learning with Mrs. Warren. We were lucky enough to have her help us explore science concepts through reading, writing, investigating, exploring, hypothesizing, collaborating, and questioning. We have traveled to Hackett's Orchard, Allenholm, Pomykala Farm, our fabulous boardwalk behind the school, our school garden, and even our very own playground. We learned inside and outside, developing a love of science and learning. Thank you for everything Mrs. Warren! We look forward to having you as part of our Reading Workshop in January!

Buddy Reading

We began exploring the concept of "buddy reading" during Reading Workshop today. Our learning objective was "I can read to someone to grow as a reader" and it addresses common core standard R.L.K.10: Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.

We started with "turn-and-talk", which is when we talk with a partner about what we are learning. The specific question we were answering was: "Why do you suppose we want to read to someone every day?"

Here is what the kindergarten said:
"Because it is fun!"
"We get to work with our friends!"
"To become better readers!"
"To practice hard words."
"To not be afraid to read in front of other people."
"To read together!"

I added to practice reading skills and strategies and to help with fluency.

I then modeled how we should sit when we buddy read. Elbow, elbow, knee,  knee, or as we remember it "EEKK!" After the modeling it was time to get started! Check out the pictures of your kids becoming strong readers. They are amazing!!!!

We are very busy making decorations for a community service project. Tomorrow we will hang them at the fire station to make it nice for their tree lighting this weekend.

Change Over Time

We are learning about change and growth over time. Each day I show a picture of one of us as a baby and we try to guess who it is. This is a great way to see how much we have changed in 5-6 short years. This student is showing us what she wore home from the hospital. Boy has she grown! :)

Writing Tools

During Writing Workshop today we talked about using another writing tool, our alphabet chart. Using this new tool will help us as we work throughout the year on common core standard K.W.3 Writing: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened. It will also help with a language standard, K.L.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
1. Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds
2. Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships
